Cristina
got her Bachelor degree in chemistry at the University of Pisa,
Italy, in 2003 and worked at the National Council of Research
of Pisa and at the University of Pisa (Agriculture department)
until 2004. She joined the Applied Ecology Research Group in
March 2006 as a PhD student under a Melbourne University overseas
student scholarship.
Cristina's
PhD project is part of a collaborative research program between
The University of Melbourne and Melbourne Water. This project
aims to assess phytoextraction as a means of remediating contaminated
biosolid stockpiles and mercury-contaminated soils, by long-term
exposure to sewage sludge at the Western Treatment Plant, Werribee,
Victoria. The project involves field sampling, monitoring and
speciation of mercury and experiments to assess the fate and
bioavailability of mercury in biosolids and soils, during phytoextraction
using Hg-accumulating plants.
